Flying high

Flying high

It’s kinda wierd that I tend to take so many pictures of birds. I really don’t like birds that much. They seem like rats with wings to me most of the time. They can be so annoying, pooping on everything and making noise and such. Yet I keep photographing them. I think I’m just fascinated by their ability to fly and they make it look so easy.

Standing still

Standing still

As I was walking along this deer and a smaller one stepped out into the creek and were drinking water. I had my shorter lens on and was a good distance from them. I slowly and quietly changed lenses and snapped a few, but they just seemed too far away. So I slowly crept along the edge hiding behind trees. Every so often they would pause and look my way but they didn’t take off. So I moved in closer and closer. Then I paused and snapped this one which turned out the best. I had to crop it because I was down in some trees and brush without a totally clear view. I started moving closer when they either heard or smelled me and they left in a hurry. There was another moment when I was sitting on the railroad tracks shooting when a larger deer stepped out onto the tracks not far from me but too far for the 50mm. I went to change my lens and as I lifted it up to shoot he took off.

Lone Duck

Lone Duck

I took my kids to a park the other night and between them and their cousins they scared off every goose, duck or other type of bird around this pond. It was interesting to watch them as they floated along. Most of them tended to stay in little groups, but this one duck I noticed seemed to go to each group and each time the group would swim away. I guess we’ll never know what made this guy an outcast but it was kinda sad watching him swimming all alone.

Morning walk

Morning walk

I got up really early the other morning with the intention of getting some good sunrise shots. I wandered around for a couple of hours as the sun was coming up and took a bunch of pictures. I think there’s one other shot that I actually cared for all the rest looked like junk. Oh well…guess that’s how it goes.

Green Eyed Bug

Green Eyed Bug

I don’t really like bugs. I was out shooting by a stream and heard this guy fly past my head. It sounded like a huge bee. It’s alot bigger than it looks here that’s for sure. Right after I shot a bunch of him sitting like this I watched him take off and tackle a moth mid air. He took the moth and it looked like he was shaking the life out of him. Then I got a bit too close and he flew to another bush while carrying the moth. Here is a shot of him holding the moth while hanging from a leaf with one leg. I thought about making this a seperate post but it’s kinda gross and I didn’t want to look at it for a whole day! I’m not sure what this thing is, it seemed like a cross between a dragon fly and a spider. I was surprised at how close I was able to get to him. For awhile he really seemed to be posing for me. :)
